Arsenault Classification: Business Consulting, Accounting, Active Sponsor: Jack Mulligan James Tingley Classification: Hotel Management, Active Sponsor: Allan McLeod If no written objections to the proposal, stating reasons are received by the Board from any member of the Club by Wednesday, Sept. 31, 1998 in the case of David Arsenault, or Wednesday , Oct 7, 1998, in the case of James Tingley, in accordance with Article XI Section 5 of the Constitution, the prospective member shall be considered to be elected to the club. Any correspondence should be addressed to Membership Secretary Carl Bagnall. District Governor's Visit DG Trevor Aitken will be making his official visit to our club on October 5th. It is hoped that all Rotarians will be in attendance, as DG Trevor brings us his message and outlines RI's goals for the year 1998-99. The Board will be meeting with the DG on October 4th, location to be announced later. Previous Meeting The September 21st meeting featured Tetrathon Champion with Kara Grant as the main speaker. The meeting was chaired by Carl Bagnall and co-chaired by Valerie Downe. The song leader for the day was Terry Tanner. Secretary's Report: Secretary Allan MacLeod introduced 7 visiting Rotarians, 3 guests of Rotary and 2 guests of Rotarians. 50/50 Draw Winner: The winner was Bush Dumville who received $49.00. The jackpot of $1061.00 was not won. Attendance: The attendance was 65.8% and there were 9 scooters. President's Message: President Moe Rodgerson extended a warm welcome to the visiting Rotarians and a special welcome to Ros Hartland's parents, who are visiting from Australia. Banner Exchange: Two banners from Rotary Clubs in the United States and Australia were presented. Best Wishes were extended to Phil Bower for speedy recovery after eye surgery. Thanksgiving Flower Project - Judy McCann-Beranger presented a brief report on this project. Flowers for this project will be purchased, at a discount, by the Club from Hearts and Flowers. People may then purchase either bouquets ($6/each) or center pieces ($28/each) to be delivered to their workplace on Friday October 9th. If you are willing to help with this project please contact any of the following: - Ron Profit, Betty Praught, Alden O'Brien, Ray Loxdale, Peggy Coady, Lloyd Patriquin, Allison Swan, Charlie Downe, Dale Mader, Neil Buchanan, Tom Cottreau or Judy. Last year this project generated $3000. For the QEH. Auction sale winners were Ken MacDonald, Ron Orton and Ivan Morrison. Auction Sale - John Broderick remarked that canvassing will last for 4 weeks ending on October 16. The auction will take place on November 28. Rotarians were given pledge cards and gift certificates. Rotarians' help in this project will be appreciated. District Mini-Conference: President Moe reminded Rotarians that this conference will be held on November 7,1998 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Camp Gencheff. New Member - Chester (Chet) MacNeil, whose classification is Economic Development, was introduced by Wes MacAleer. Chet, an Islander, holds a BA degree in Economics and Business Administration. He has taught in school, worked as an accountant and with an insurance company. His military career includes a number of prestigious positions and travelling all over the world in conjunction with his career. Chet concluded his service in the rank of Lt.-Colonel. Currently he is an Executive Assistant to the Minister of Economic Development and Tourism with research and liaison duties. Chet has been active in various capacities with volunteer organizations. Speaker Kara Grant, Tetrathon Champion and the day's speaker was introduction by Carl Bagnall. Kara graduated with honours from Charlottetown Rural High School and is currently a second year student at UPEI. She is an avid sports person. Programme Speaker Kara Grant talked about her experiences in sporting activities. Kara began by thanking the club for inviting her to speak and remarked that is was an honour for her to explain what she is doing. She remarked that she is relatively new and began training in 1990, starting her career in the pony club. Kara owned her first horse in 1993 and did well in 1995 as a PEI Junior athlete of the year. She participated in Tetrathon involving fencing, swimming, running and shooting. She also participates in horse riding. In her career she competed in San Antonio, Texas, placing 18th out of 29. She placed 3rd in Pentathlon and 1st in Tetrathon held in Alberta and Saskatchewan. She has had wonderful opportunity of travelling in England, Europe and many other countries and in competing. Kara did well in competitions held in the Czech Republic. She is training for Pan American games to be held in 1999. Her goal is to be able to compete in the 2000 Olympics. Co-chair Valerie Downe in thanking Kara stated that she enjoyed her remarks. Valerie said that Kara's experience has a tremendous impact on our children. "All Rotarians join me in saying how proud we are of your achievements. We thank you for coming to speak to us."
