TOP TEAMS HONOURED

Beaming with pride the Rotarians assembled on stage as the top awards were presented in the Race to Raise Funds for Community Projects. It had been a true marathon; lists, telephone calls, personal visits, items, gift certificates, more phone calls, deliveries to the drop-off centre, but for these team members the extra effort resulted in top honours. The glistening armload of classy bronze, silver and gold medals was surpassed only by the glow of the recipients.

"This is one small step for a Rotarian, one giant leap for the Rotary Auction," Roger Craig stated as he called the groups forward, one by one. Rotary Auction Chair, John Broderick spoke of his pride in the achievement of the teams, "Never in the history of the Rotary Auction have so many, collected so much, in so short a period of time."

For the team members it was an opportunity to reflect with pride on their accomplishment. Stu Drummond, Team Captain of Drummond's Dazzlers, was almost overtaken by emotion as his team mates received their gold medals, saying "If they play the Rotary song, I won't be able to hold back the tears. What a team, we followed our Rotary Dream."

Similar sentiments were reflected in the comments of the other team captains. "I won't be taking this off til Christmas. It means more to me than Santa Claus," commented Tom DeBlois Junior, "I am so proud of the DeBlois Doubtfuls and their commitment. We tried hard, but you know its over when Roger Craig sings."

For others, the firm commitment to competition had them thinking about the year ahead. "I'll be back", stated Mark Robertson of the team Robertson's Raiders, "And next year, we shall fight for more certificates, we shall fight for more items, we shall fight for a faster drop-off, we shall make more calls, we shall go for the gold."

The medals proudly hanging around their necks, the participants descended from the dias to once again join their fellow Rotarians, but knowing that for that one moment in history they had reached the highest, dug the deepest, endured the most, they had completed their lists.

Paul Harris Fellowship: Austin Bowman was made a Paul Harris Fellow for his financial support to the Rotary International Foundation. Austin was presented with a certificate, medallion and pin. In accepting the PHF Austin remarked "that it is a humble moment in my 18 years membership in this club." Chair Bob extended his congratulations to Austin on becoming a Paul Harris Fellow.

Rotarians in the News: Chair Bob congratulated Bob Smith and Paul Newcombe on their recent awards from the Association of Professional Engineers which were presented at their annual meeting.

Programme Chair Bob Sear gave a slide presentation on the Rotary Foundation. Rotary International Foundation was established in 1917 by the 6th President Arch Klumph of Atlanta. By 1928 the contributions grew to $5000. First support from the Foundation was given to International Society of Crippled Children. After the death of Paul Harris in 1947 the fund grew rapidly. By the year 1995 contributions to the fund grew to $825 million with $61 million alone being generated in 1994-95. The Foundation supports many programmes including 3-H grants, GSE, Ambassadorial Scholarships and PoliPlus. $247 million (US) has been spent on PolioPlus. The goal of PolioPlus is to eradicate Polio by the year 2000.

How can you support the Foundation and its programmes? By becoming a PHF ($1000 US donation), a Sustaining Member (initial $100 US donation, total donation of $1000 US), multiple PHF (additional $1000 US donation) and Benefactor ($1000 US minimum donation to the Foundation left in your will).

Co-chair Peter Norton in his remarks congratulated Roger Craig and John Broderick for their role in the Rotary Auction, and Wayne Thompson in his selection to the GSE Team. Congratulations were extended to Austin Bowman on his being made a Paul Harris Fellow and for his contribution to Rotary.

Makeups to Nov. 30 - Carl Willis, Judy McCann-Beranger.
