President's Message
Welcome to new member David Arsenault, and thanks to Jack Mulligan for sponsoring a new member. A reminder that next week is our Remembrance Day Program - Please be early and no scooting. Since our club is home of the DG Elect, I would like to see at least 24 members attend the Mini-Conference on November 7, 8:45 - 1:00.
Every time you take part in a Rotary project, attend a meeting, conduct business or interact with others, you have the opportunity to honour the Object of Rotary.
"Rotary's purpose is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise, and in particular, to encourage and foster:
a) The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service.
b) High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and dignifying by each Rotarian his/her occupation as an opportunity to serve society.
c) The application of the ideal of service by every Rotarian to his/her personal, business and community life.
d) The advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace through a world of fellowship of business and professional men and women united in the ideal of service."
The methods by which Rotarians meet the object of Rotary is through the four avenues of service. Our own Club structure reflects directly these four avenues; Community Service, Vocational Service, International Service, and Club Service. All our committees fall under one of the avenues of service. At least one Director is responsible for each area of service. Due to the size of our Club we have three Directors responsible for aspects of Club Service, two for Community Service, and one each for International and Vocational.
Community Service involves all our major fund raisers and activities such as Camp Gencheff, Senior Citizens and Environment. International Service reflects the International nature of Rotary with programs such as Youth Exchange and World Community Service. Vocational Service encompasses the Entrepreneurship committee and Youth.
Club Service involves all the logistics associated with the weekly operation of our meetings from attendance to new members.
In each endeavour we honour the Rotary commitment to service.
The conference is at 9:20 am and the theme is "Follow Your Rotary Dream" the inspiration of current RI President James Lacey.
Guest Speaker Bruce MacNaughton had many nuggets to admire and amongst these were:
1. His wife, 2 kids, 4 horses and several rabbits,
2. "Size doesn't matter".
3. "If you want to succeed with a product, you have to promote Branding - not just another commodity". (Branding separates the 'individual' from the 'mob'.)
4. "PEI sometimes is guilty of underselling itself",
5. "If you don't have the brand or item the customer wants - then offer to mail it FREE - and DO IT!" (He reports over 2000 mail customers as a result of this approach.),
6. "In business for yourself you'll make mistakes, admit them, it's humbling and beneficial.",
7. "Failing to Plan is Planning to Fail",
8. "Listen to your staff - they are waling Billboards for your company",
9. "There are three E's in Business, enthusiasm, expertise and empathy.
It was a fine speech and a most fitting recognition of Small Business Week. Bruce had 37 employees three years ago, now there are 87. Small can become Big.
Thanks and a photo were presented by Boyce Murphy to all three of our guest speakers. He did it briefly and well as was the club song Prince Edward Island is Heaven to Me - well chosen and a welcome part of a great meeting.

Previous Meeting
With Scott (Cicero) Ferris in the chair, the Oct. 26th regular meet was off to a fine start. Flanking him at the Head table were Lou Pantry, (D.O.B.); Tom DeBlois, Songster, D.G. (E) Wayne Hambly, Angela Marchbank, Special Olympics; President Moe Rodgerson, Secretary Alan MacLeod, Sharon Cameron from the Dept. Of Education and co-chair Boyce Murphy. Centering that line was guest speaker Bruce MacNaughton, founder and president of the Prince Edward Island
Preserve Company. (Gordon Kerr also was in the birthday mode)
Visiting Rotarians - This formidable line up was: Messrs, Jelly, White, DesRoches, Cudmore, Smith, Murphy, Ivany, MacKay, MacKinnon, Craig and MacLaughlan from the other Island clubs. From WAWA, Ontario came Phil Cook who exchanged banners with us. From Yellowknife, N.W.T. was Rotarian Seamus Henry, from Shediac, N.B. was Rotarian Bourque. Giving a gentler coloration to this group was Rotarian Dianne Lank.
Rotary Exchange Students: Joining us for the luncheon were Ros Hartland of Australia and Mika Of Japan.
Guests of Rotarians were Gail Ferris, Judy Kemp, Alan Gaudet, Connie MacAleer and Donna Lank.
New Member Inducted - We saw and enjoyed a sort of transformation during the course of the meeting when David Arsenault who started the meeting as a guest was later confirmed as our newest member. Rotarian Jack Mulligan introduced him to the President and the Club. President Moe conducted David's formal induction into the Club with the classification Business Consultant, Accountant, Active. Welcome from everyone, David!
A look across Rotary - as reminded during David's induction, our club is one of 28,700 throughout the world and spread around 157 countries. David also adds himself to 1,300,000 other Rotarians. Remarkable!
Secretary's Report: Rotarian Alan McLeod gave his report and in the course of it managed to bury the Queen of Hearts in a dwindling deck with the result that 50/50 patron George Rogers pulled out the Jack of Hearts ( or was it Lantern?) Thereby winning $59. Note - all potential visiting Rotarians and Members, the Jackpot is not at $1,272. And the deck is slimming.
Attendance was 73% and there were only 6 Scooters.
Rotary Auction: Rotarian John Broderick, chair of this Great Auction, reported "stuff" is rolling in and extended the deadline to Wednesday, October 28th for getting donations of goods and services in for the cable TV advertising.
Greetings: The Club received a very nice message from the Rotary Club of South Wagawaga, New South Wales, Australia. Hello, and Thank You, down there!
Angela Marchbank told us on Monday noon the PEI sent 23 competitors to the Special Olympics and 21 medals were won. Simply grand results and she thanked Rotary for its support of these Special Olympians.
Sharon Cameron of the PEI Department of Education brought thanks and a plaque to the Rotary Club for its support and promotion of the "Taking Kids to Work". She noted that "unusual as it may seem, last year she was visiting us on the same day and Rotarian Lou was again having a Birthday and sat beside her at luncheon". Lou, you are on lucky dog.
District Governor Elect Wayne Hambly was strangely muted in the anecdote and story department - considerable relief was evidenced by several members at this unexpected turn of events but did not deter the Governor Elect from reminding and inviting new and experienced Rotarians to the Rotary Mini Conference at Camp Genchef November 7th at 8:15 am. It's over at 1 pm and offers vital Rotary information. The chair is Rotarian Tom Wilkinson, the fee is $10. And Rotarians from across the province will be there. The keynote speaker will address the conference at 9:20 am and the theme is "Follow Your Rotary Dream" the inspiration of current RI President James Lacey.
Guest Speaker Bruce MacNaughton had many nuggets to admire and amongst these were:
