President's Message

Today we will meet, and have the opportunity to thank, some of the people who have been instrumental in the success of the Easter Seals Campaign. This year presented some special challenges, but it also demonstrated some of the special skills of our club members, and the members of the community who support our efforts.

The number of people, groups and organizations involved in the Easter Seals campaign is extensive and reflects a cross section of our community. A special thanks to all those who were involved in the campaign, and to the many Islanders who donate to Easter Seals. Your support helps meet the needs of many Islanders.

Special recognition to Wayne Hambly who is now officially the District Governor for District 7820, and his district team which includes a number of members from our Club. I understand it was a successful conference in St. John's and we are looking forward to a very successful year.

On another topic, it says something very positive about our community when with a simple phone call to City Hall a tree planting, like the one conducted with Belisario, can be arranged. In many larger cities such a request would have been immediately rejected or ignored. The city officials were most helpful in fulfilling the request including choosing a site, getting the tree (a sugar Maple) and digging the hole. The event add a nice touch to the GSE visit.

Cash Draw: Serving as Chair of the meeting paid off for Gaie Woodside. She picked up $53 in the regular draw, but the Queen of Hearts eluded her when she drew the five of spades and left behind the $500.

Attendance: 76.3% with 19 Scooters.

Congratulations

President Moe: Congratulated Angus and Karen on the birth of their son Henry Clifford Orford.

He thanked the Rotarians involved in the GSE visit for their assistance with everything from accommodations, to travel, to vocational visits.

"Without the generous support of individual Rotarians this type of exchange would not be possible. I am very proud of the manner in which the members of our Club volunteered for various aspects of the visit."

TREE PLANTING

Mayor George MacDonald, President Moe and team leader Belisario Nieva took part in the planting of a tree of friendship in Rochford Park. Belisario suggested the planting after his visit to Province House and learning that Charlottetown is the birthplace of Canada (July 1). His home province is the birthplace of independence for Argentina (July 9) and their Historic House is similar to our Province House. His province in Argentina is often referred to as the garden province, as is Prince Edward Island.

Belisario called the tree panting an "emotional experience" and the tree will serve as a reminder of the GSE team visit here and the Rotary ties that reach around the world.

PHOTOS PRESENTED

His Honour, Lieutenant Governor Gilbert R. Clements, presented each member of the Group Study Exchange Team with a photo taken during their visit to Government House.

GSE TEAM VISITS

The Group Study Exchange Team from Argentina spent seven days, about one-quarter of their visit to district 7820, on Prince Edward Island. Every Island Rotary Club had the opportunity to enjoy some fellowship with the team members, and they attended four of five Island meetings.

In speaking to the Club Team Leader Belisario stressed the role of the Rotary Foundation in supporting the Group Study Exchange Program. It enabled his team, from the South of South America to visit the North of North America. He extended an invitation to Rotarians to visit Argentina, especially next year when the Rotary International Convention will be held in Buenos Aires.

Maria Luisa is a computer teacher at a medical school and also teaches at an elementary school. Ana is a language teacher and head mistress at a private school. She is also a teacher at two public schools. Ana Elizabeth is sponsored by a Rotary Club that has only women members.

Marcelo is a computer engineer working with the government in the area of financial administration.

The name Argentina is derived from the Latin for silver. It covers 3.8 million square kilometres. Spanish is the official language. The population is about 35 million, and ten million live in the capital area. Argentina is a democratic republic with both provincial and federal governments. There are 23 provinces, and similar to Canada they elect their own governments.

Education is a combination of public and private institutions. University is free to all students. Many people immigrated to Argentina after the first and second world wars giving it a truly international culture.

Most houses in Argentina are constructed of brick because of the heat, and in contrast to Canada the evening meal is often eaten late in the evening, about 10:00 pm because of the heat in the afternoon. The climate varies from rain forest to mountains with snow.

Soccer is the main sport in the country, along with polo, grass hockey, and tennis. Public transit involves buses, planes, and some trains.

The products produced include vineyards, cotton, sugar cane, fish along the coast, lemons and petroleum.

The team members also showed a video about their home province and its' key cities.
