President's Message

A very big thank you to the Easter Seals Committee for a tremendous year. There is no question it was a "stressful" year given the challenge of the last minute change in the telethon. Jim MacNutt must be singled out for his leadership of the committee. They readily accepted the challenges. Every time Jim called, if he outlined a problem, you could be sure that it would be followed by a well developed plan as a solution. Thanks Jim for an outstanding effort.

Our last meeting also underscored the connection between Rotary and many other organizations in our community. Six tables were filled with many non-Rotarians who take an active part in the Easter Seals campaign and help ensure the success. And, what a success. Even with some last minute changes the net proceeds will be substantially higher than last year.

The Easter Seals Campaign is also an example of cooperation among Rotary clubs in meeting the objectives of Service Above Self. Through that cooperation we are able to hold a province-wide campaign and benefit Islanders in communities across the province.

We can also take pride in the faith of Islanders in what we do and how we do it. It is individuals making a donation that makes our campaign successful, and in making that donation they are entrusting to Rotary the use of those funds for the benefit of Islanders.

Thanks to all involved, the committee, those who assist the committee, and the many, many people who donate.

GONG DONATED

Several years ago the Club's gong disappeared. An exhaustive search failed to turn up old faithful and Past President Richard Veinot approached Gordon Tweedy with the idea of having a new gong made. The result of that effort was presented to the Club last week - a very impressive gong, already with a rich history that involves voyages by land sea and air and it is truly international in true with the various components having come from or travelled to many areas of the world including: United States, India, Canada and Pakistan. The support for the bell is actually a military shell from the HMCS Lanark. The bell travelled on the Earl Gray and the rope and mounting brackets were prepared by the Coast Guard.

Gordon presented in memory of his father, and the name plague from his late fathers office door is part of the dedication plaque. "I'm just past my 35th year in rotary so together with my father we have over 100 years of Rotary involvement. My father was a judge for over 35 years and when he spoke people had to listen. Now when this bell rings over 150 people will have to keep quiet and my father would have liked that."

George Tweedy served as a Rotarian for 67 years, was President of the Charlottetown Rotary Club and one of the founders of the Rotary Auction.

President Moe:

Thanked Gordon Tweedy for the presentation of the new Gong which will have a place of honour at club meetings and serve as a reminder of the active involvement of his father and the components represent the true International nature of Rotary.

Stressed the active community support so important to the success of the Easter Seals Campaign, and that he many groups and businesses for their dedication to Easter Seals and the benefits it brings to many Islanders.

Stressing that fellow Rotarians were able to "prevent him from telling jokes" Wayne Hambly was congratulated on being elected as District Governor at the Newfoundland Convention.

Accepted a banner from the Wichita Falls, Texas club and presented our visitor with a banner from our club.

Thanked the JoyRiders, an organization we support, for a copy of their annual report.

Indicated two make-up cards were turned in from the Hillsborough club. One from April 29 with no name. Another with a name that can't be made out and no date. Did you pass the card(s) in?

Cash Draw: Phil Bower was the winner and netted $53, then came close to adding to his winning by pulling the Ace of Hearts from the deck. The Queen remains, the jackpot $500.

Attendance: For the last meeting of May was 75% with 14 Scooters.

EASTER SEALS WRAP UP

Easter Seals Chair Jim Macnutt says there are two ways to look at a problem, find faults or make the effort. He praised the Easter Seals Committee for "pulling together" in what was termed a "year of stress." He introduced the committee members and praised them for the team work that enabled us to achieve another successful Easter Seals Campaign, even with the dramatic alteration to the traditional telethon because of the CBC strike.

Jim highlighted the role of volunteers in the annual campaign, pointing out that while we raise as much money as some other provinces, we are the only province that relies solely on volunteers to organize and run the campaign.

Many businesses, organizations, and individuals are represented by that term "volunteers". Jim introduced a number of them, including: Harry O'Connell - Microage; Fred Morash - Island Tel; Janice Blacquiere - Tim Hortons; Jennifer Nunn - CBC; Charlie Scranton; Steve Stapleton - IATSI; Jackie Simmonds - Estate of Doris Bradley; John Corbet - ADL; Frank Lewis - Island Radio; Curtis Barlow - Confederation Centre; Brenda Gallant - Island Telecom; Christine MacCallum - National Bank; Julie Fraser - MacNutt and Dumont; John Ives - Century 21; John Gallant - Maritime Electric; Bush Dumville - Burger King; Pat Banks - Sign Craft; Michael Schurman - Schurmans.

From the bottom line point of view, Bill Flemming says given the fact expenses were lower this year the campaign will end up with more net proceeds than previous years, about $10,000 more.

AMBASSADORS TOUR BIG SUCCESS

"I was very honoured to be chosen" was Jeremy MacDonald's reaction to Club thanks for his role as Easter Seals Ambassador. Reflecting on his visits to Island schools, the radio day, hockey game, and numerous other events he said "I met interesting and fun people." He thanked the students and staff of the schools for their support of the Ambassadors tour.

He expressed appreciation to Tim Hortons for organizing the Ambassador's tour and arranging the visits to the 65 schools take part in the tour.

Jeremy was presented with a GIC by the Rotary Club and a plaque recognizing his involvement in the 1999 campaign.

Janice Blacquiere of Tim Horton's expressed appreciation to the students and teachers and the Rotarians who take part in the tour. Janice presented a cheque for $24,705.01 to the Easter Seals Campaign, an increase of over $3,000 from last year.

Lorne Moase thanked Jeremy, and his parents Wayne and Eileen for the support and assistance with the campaign.

EASTER SEALS SATURDAY

Jennifer Evans reported on the success of the Easter Seals Saturday event undertaken by Island Radio. The staff of CFCY, Magic 93, and CHTN combined to participate in the telethon and the Country Hoe down was hosted from the Confederation Centre that night featuring local and regional artists.

Jennifer says many sponsors make the event possible, and enabled the show to be put together and staged with three weeks notice.

MAIL CAMPAIGN

Marilyn MacKinnon, chair of the mail campaign, reports success. The goal is $34,000 and already the amount collected is $33,310, and there is almost one month left in the campaign. The results to date are up 16% over last year, so they expect to reach the goal or exceed it. She thanked Islanders for supporting the mail campaign, and expressed appreciation to Tremploy for their assistance.

Makeups to May 31/99 Don Anderson, Austin Bowman, Richard Martin (2), Chris Severence (2), Walter Cox (2)
