From the President's Desk At last Monday's Board of Directors meeting a number of issues were brought forward which I would like to bring to the Club's attention. Two issues for immediate consideration involve the Bulletin itself and committee terms of reference and I would ask each of you to consider the following for action. Bulletin: We are currently still working without a bulletin editor and while in the short term I am rather enjoying putting this together it has brought several issues to the forefront. The direction the bulletin should take is an issue I would like to challenge each member to consider. The bulletin should address the needs of the Club, as a whole, and your input is requested. Several of you have already provided suggestions for improvement/change. Some of these suggestions have already been taken or you will be seeing them implemented over the next few weeks. I value each of your suggestions on improvement and welcome them. At the next Club assemble or forum we plan that the bulletin will be an issue for discussion, and now is the time to start thinking. Should we continue with a weekly bulletin or go monthly? Could it be mailed out to members? Are there items you would like to have included or removed from the bulletin? Could we use a bulletin board to inform members of routine matters? Other suggestions! Also relative to the bulleting the Board would encourage you to take it home for your partner. This would be one way of getting information widely distributed and we could start enhancing the content to include information of wider interest. I look forward to your suggestions. Committee terms of references and manuals: Over the years terms of references and operational manuals for our committees have been prepared. Needless to say we don't know where they all are and you may have copies of these. I would like to challenge each of you to try and find these items if you may have had them at one time, regardless of how old they may be. We would like to put these together in a central repository and upgrade them where necessary so that committees can be better served. Rotary Service We recognize birthdays and anniversaries and once a year those with perfect attendance. However it is also important that we recognize the years of service that Rotarians have given to the Club and community. The following Rotarians are recognized on this week's anniversary of their induction into our Club. Carl Bagnall 8 years Clive Stewart 3 Greeters for the coming weeks Please be early, and if you can't make it please find a replacement. Previous Meeting (July 19, 1999) Fos Fisher was the lucky winner of this week's 50/50 draw, but he pulled the 10 of clubs so the jackpot remains unclaimed and growing at over $550. For those of you wondering about the odds....there are 40 cards left in the deck. Kara Thompson, our returning exchange student from France, graced the head table. We will hear more from her at a future meeting, and maybe a little of the French accent will still be there. Our quest speaker was Joe Donachie, a fellow Rotarian from the Amherst Club. Joe among other roles heads up the Rotary Home Exchange Fellowship. He addressed the Club on Operation Condor a Rotary International sponsored medical project. The project is one involving Rotary medical volunteers supported by the Rotary Foundation. The project was conducted in an area of Peru which is also a cocaine and guerilla hot bed. The volunteer group was made up of about 70 medical, translator and support people. Several translators had to be used to go from English to Spanish then the native language and back, which Joe commented on made some of the medical questioning challenging for the medical staff, where medical supplies and infrastructure is not the best to begin with. Joe commented on the types of medical problems they help with and how the people will now start lining up before the team even arrives on their yearly trip to the region. Another example of Rotary in action throughout the world, and another way Rotarians can volunteer their expertise, and the positive returns which result to all concerned. Appropriately enough, since it is thru the Rotary Foundation that international projects are undertake, two Paul Harris Fellowships were awarded during the meeting. Both Fellowships were to non-Rotarians as our Club's way of recognizing their commitment and work in the community. A Fellowship was awarded to Frank Lewis in recognition of his business accomplishments and dedication to the community thru his association with Island Radio. He was instrumental in the success of this years Rotary Easter Seals broadcast and with the Rotary Radio Auction before we went to the TV format. We also recognized Mary Sage for her long and dedicated commitment and activities in our community. Her list of community activity was long, including charter and long time member of the QEH foundation, Charlottetown Winter Carnival, Chamber of Commerce, Chair provincial United Way, Canadian Mental Health Association, Schizophrenia Society and many more. She was speechless at being so recognized by our Club. Thanks again to Bush for handling Motorcycle Bob's activity on PEI and to Gary Craswell (Rodd's) and Hal Bevan (Inn-on-the-Hill) for suppling accommodations. Ivan's jelly bean sales went well and proceeds will go to the Polio Plus campaign (although I think everyone was charged a different amount). Drivers for JoyRiders - three more opportunities to get involved Ivan Morrison is looking for drivers to help take Camp Gencheff campers from the Camp to the JoyRiders stables. The next rides are the evenings Aug 3, 10 and 24, leaving the Camp at 6:30 and returning at 8:30. Please help on one or all days, what ever you can.
