President's Message

It takes the active involvement of many people to ensure the effective operation of a service club. In our club there are those who are consistently active in support of our club and its projects, and others who tend to focus the majority of their involvement on one project. What ever the means or method the contribution of each member is vital to the overall health of the club. Many times we fail to realize just how active we are as an organization, how much we have achieved, and the difference we are making in the community. Because of our size it is often difficult to get an overall perspective on what is taking place and what it means. As President, every once in a while, you are fortunate enough to get a glimpse of the dynamic organization that is the Charlottetown Rotary Club. Just like the wheel, our symbol, the cogs of our Rotary Club mesh together in many different and unexpected ways and in many different aspects of the community. There is not a day goes by that our presence is not felt: in the work we do on committees; in the projects and programs we operate; in our weekly meetings; in the funds we raise and disperse to help others meet community goals and objectives.

As we enter the new year let us keep in mind that we are making a difference, we are doing good work. We can't solve all the problems, but the fact we recognize there are problems and strive to address them is the best contribution of all. To all members and their families and friends best wishes for a healthy and prosperous 1999.

Keep The Rotary Foundation dream alive

Each year, The Rotary Foundation dramatically changes millions of lives: young scholars become inquisitive ambassadors of peace; impoverished villages get their first taste of clean water; children are immunized against life-threatening diseases; struggling single mothers start their own businesses; isolated seniors learn someone cares.

We are doing all of these amazing works &mdash and more &mdash because of the dream of one man. It was the dream of past RI President Arch Klumph that gave us our Rotary Foundation 81 years ago. And it will be our Rotary dreams that keep the Foundation alive.

That is why I ask you to work through The Rotary Foundation this year as you strive to meet the special needs of children and our communities.

The Children's Opportunities Grants available this year offer a special way to reach more children. I encourage you to take advantage of this one-time initiative.

Another way to help children is PolioPlus. If you aren't doing so already, consider offering your support through the PolioPlus Partners program. This program is ensuring that Rotary clubs in polio-endemic countries have the funds they need for immunization and surveillance in the final stretch of this critical fight for the world's children.

However you do it, become a part of the Foundation team. Do it for the children who cry out for help. Write a check. Offer your expertise as a volunteer. Join with your club members to plan an international project. Explore service options in a part of the world you've never considered before. Use all the Foundation resources to help you Follow Your Rotary Dream.

With your contributions and compassion, The Rotary Foundation will thrive. It will continue to reach the most innocent and helpless members of our world. And it will light the way for future generations of Rotarians to insure that our children's children will know only health, happiness and peace.
