President's Message
This is Rotary Awareness Month. There are two aspects of Rotary awareness that we should focus on this month. The first is to educate ourselves. Rotary International is involved in a number of major initiatives and programs, such a PolioPlus. Individual clubs are involved in literally thousands of initiatives involving millions of people world wide. Take some time this month to review the Rotary magazine or to gain some insight into the various programs that are offered by Rotary International and the impact they are making in the world. Our own Club is a sponsor of foster children, participates in the Youth Exchange Program, is a leading supporter of the RI Foundation, and has directly sponsored projects providing medical supplies and a reforestation initiative.
Secondly, share the message of Rotary. How many people know you are a Rotarian but have no idea what we do as a club or an organization. How many times have your heard "Oh, you're the ones that sing" when you tell people you are involved in Rotary. We do sing, but we do a lot more than sing, and its time we sang about the contribution we make to our community.
Each Rotarian should make an effort to help people understand and appreciate the many activities we are involved in and what it means to us and to others. We are a service club, a very active service club. Explaining that fact might generate interest in joining Rotary and insight into the benefits that result from the support of Rotary projects might foster increased support.
This month increase your own awareness, then share that awareness with others.
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
From a club bulletin
Be Pro-Active: Take the initiative and the responsibility to make things happen.
Begin With an End in Mind: Start with a clear destination to understand where you are now, were you're going and what you value most.
Put First Things First: Manage yourself. Organize and execute around priorities.
Think Win/Win: See life as a cooperative, not a comprehensive arena where success is not achieved at the expense of exclusion or the success of others.
Seek First to Understand: Understand then be understood to build the skills of empathetic listening that inspires openness and trust.
Synergise: Apply the principles of cooperative creativity and value differences.
Renewal: Preserving and enhancing your greatest asset, yourself, by renewing the physical, spiritual, mental and social/emotional dimensions of your nature.

Thanks From Prince Edward Home
The following note was received from the Resident's Council of the Prince Edward Home following our Christmas sing-song.
"Our sincere thanks to you all for coming to entertain us at this busy time of year."
Premier Addresses Club
Premier Pat Binns praised Rotarians and business leaders for their investments in the community which fuelled expansion of the business community and demonstrate confidence in the future. "The Capital Region has a dynamic head of steam built up, and it is led by private sector development.....The list is very impressive."
The economy grew by about two percent in 1998, three times higher than the rate predicted by some leading institutions. International exports grew by 23.2 percent in the first ten months, totalling over $430 million. A very strong price improvement for potatoes helped create an increase in farm cash receipts although hog prices dropped dramatically. The value of lobster landings increased by 7.6%.
Continued growth in the tourism industry resulted in a ten percent increase in revenues from that sector while the number of visitors increased by over 4 percent. Premier Binns says tax policy, such as the removal of tax on clothing and footwear, can be an effective development tool "Since we removed the PST, sales increased by a whopping 23.2% in the three quarters
following the exemption."
The Premier's speech touched on a number of highlights of the past year especially advances in technology, communications and transportation infrastructure. He says the challenge is to continue to grow the economy, create jobs and preserve the best of the Island. "What we have in Prince Edward Island is what most people want....communities where people talk and work together, where you are known by name... We are blessed with most of the world's comforts, and we have the opportunity as individuals to make a difference and leave an imprint."
Over a Billion Dollars
1998 will be noted for setting a new record in terms of retail sales on PEI. Total sales for the year will top more than one billion dollars for the first time.
Fuel Doesn't Fuel Inflation
Prince Edward Island was the only province in Canada with negative inflation numbers for 1998. The main reason was a 13.4% reduction in gasoline and a 13.8% reduction in fuel oil prices.
Back to regular 50/50
Our draw today will involve the deck of cards. Last week the combined meeting involved a special 50/50 draw for Camp Gencheff. Dr. Marin Clark was the winner of $148.
Fellowship
It was a unique opportunity for some Rotary fellowship as the three Charlottetown Rotary Clubs got together last Monday for their annual joint meeting.
The Charlottetown Club served as host this year. Thanks to all who helped ensure the evening ran smoothly.
Makeups to Jan. 18/99 - Judy McCann-Beranger, Don Anderson.
