President's Message

January gets its name from the Roman god Janus, who had two faces. He could look in two directions at once, forward and backward. While two-faced people are not normally a social asset, the ability to take comfort from the past and hope in the future is at the very heart of the human experience. It can also be a very healthy experience for it offers us the opportunity to decide what needs to be changed or improved and then seek to do it. Thus the tradition of the new years resolution.

In reality we have many different new years. For Rotary, this is actually the mid point of our year, but it is also an opportunity to pause and think about our involvement and how it can be changed or improved. I encourage you to give some thought to your club commitment and how it can be improved because it is only through active involvement that we get the full benefit of Rotary membership. Are you as involved as you could be? Every committee is open to and interested in new members.

Special note of thanks to Joyce and Dave Thompson for a wonderful evening at their home. It was a great evening for Ros and all who took part. Also thanks to all who went to the airport to see Ros off.

Who's Responsible?

There were four people named Somebody, Everybody, Anybody and Nobody, who were supposed to be involved in a Rotary Project.

Anybody could have done it but Nobody did it.

Somebody got angry about it because it was Everybody's job.

Everybody thought Anybody could have done it.

So it ended up with Everybody blaming Somebody, when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

Previous Meeting

Lieutenant Governor Addresses Club

The privileges and responsibilities of Canadian citizenship were highlighted by Lieutenant Governor Gilbert R. Clements in his address to the Rotary Club. While Fanningbank is host to scores of special events and ceremonies, His Honour says "the most emotional and rewarding" is the swearing in of new Canadians. The Island ceremony had previously been held at a number of different locations, but given its importance His Honour made a concerted effort to have the ceremony presented at Government House. 36 new Canadians, from 15 different countries have been administered the Oath of Allegiance by His Honour. The countries include, India, France, Phillippines, Israel, El Salvador, China, Pakistan, and Lebanon. Some citizens are new arrivals to Canada, while others have lived here for a number of years before becoming Canadian citizens. One person was here for 30 years.

His Honour says the ceremony is a reminder of how great a country Canada is, and the role of individual citizens. "Citizenship means a lot more than having a piece of paper," stated his Honour "It represents rights and responsibilities."

His Honour challenged all Islanders to respect and honour the rights and freedoms we enjoy and to protect those rights and freedoms through active participation in society.

Quote of the Week - "Jim they couldn't blow you up in the war and they couldn't blow you up in Charlottetown..."

Lieutenant Governor Gilbert R. Clements commenting on the Caring Canada Award presented to Rotarian Jim Hogan.

Jewel's Recognized

As part of the ongoing Celebration of Island Success Stories the accomplishments of the Jewel Family were highlighted at Rotary. Several generations of the family were represented at the meeting, as they were recognized for their leadership, international reputation, and outstanding award winning efforts in agriculture, especially the potato industry. The Jewel's have been recognized many times for the quality of their produce and their leadership in the industry.

Governor General Invited to Visit

His Honour Gilbert R. Clements has extended an invitation to the Right Honourable Romeo LeBlanc, Governor General of Canada, to visit our Province, and in particular the arches built as a war memorial in the community of Mt. Carmel. His Honour took part in ceremonies this past year which marked the 50th anniversary of the memorial, which was dedicated by a Governor General and has been visited by three others.

Fanningbank Busy Site

More than a place of residence for the Lieutenant Governor, Fanningbank is the site of many special ceremonies and events. Some 115 functions were held at Fanningbank over the past year and more than 5,000 visitors were welcomed to the historic property.

Tearful Thank You

It was a dramatic example of the impact of the Youth Exchange Program as Rosalyn Hartland gave a tearful thank you to the Club, host families, Youth Exchange Committee, and those who made her year in our province possible. Ros was overcome with emotion as she spoke at her last Club meeting. It was obvious she very much enjoyed her experience and returns home with many fond memories of Prince Edward Island.

A very enjoyable evening involving the exchange students, parents of outbound exchange students and Rotarians was held at the home of Dave and Joyce Thompson to bid farewell to Ros. It was an opportunity for Ros to collect some more comments in her 'book of friends'.

Host Families Recognized

The three families that hosted Ros during her year with us were presented with plaques of recognition. All three host families are non-Rotarians and essential to the success of the Youth Exchange Program. Plaques were presented to Mike and Marie Butler, Greg and Diane Peters, and Joe and Cathy Peters.

Getting Interested

The number of cards is dropping, the jackpot is increasing and interest in the weekly cash draw is growing. Last week Betty Gay won $73. The jackpot stands at $1829. The next draw will be January 18.

Attendance for the first meeting of the new year was 76.6%. A good start to 1999.
