PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
December 14, 1998
Fellowship is an often overlooked aspect of Rotary, losing out to the community service activities. Yet, both were defining considerations of Paul Harris when he founded the organization. One might go so far as to say that fellowship was actually the stronger motivator for getting people together and community service flowed from that fellowship. Today, both are fundamental to the success of Rotary. Community service without fellowship lacks the focus, commitment and enjoyment necessary to sustain such efforts. Fellowship without any interest in community misses the greater purpose.
There is also an assumption that fellowship is something that is imposed on an organization, when in reality it is developed by the membership. Every time two Rotarians chat on the street, take part in a meeting, or work on a project there is an element of fellowship.
The dictionary defines fellowship as "Friendliness; a taking part with others; a sharing; the relationship among those holding the same views."
As the result of the membership survey we hope to be able to provide more opportunity for fellowship among the members of our club.
The Christmas season is one of those occasions that lends itself to fellowship. Maybe it is because we seem to take a greater interest in the well being of others at this time of the year.
This Christmas dinner is an opportunity for Rotarians, partners, and family to get together and enjoy some fellowship. I hope you enjoy the evening.
