From the President's Desk

So you think you know a lot about Rotary. Well today let's have a small quiz. (Answers at the end of the page)

What year was Rotary founded?

What year did Rotary become international? For a bonus point, what city was the first outside of the US?

What year was the Charlottetown Rotary Club founded?

What is the latest country to become part of the Rotary International community? And as a second part to this question: How many countries are currently represented in Rotary?

Next week the District Governor will visit our Club, for 1 point who is he/she? For a bonus point what is this year's RI President's theme?

Other things:

Our Club has received a Certificate of Recognition from the PEI Recreation and Sports Association for the Physically Challenged, in recognition of our "promotion of recreation and sport opportunities for physically challenged residents of the province of PEI".

Last week I said I'd provide some information of the District 7820 Golf Tournament. I have the registration form if you are interested in attending. It will be Monday Sept 13 at the Truro Golf Club in (where else) Truro. The cost is $60 and includes green fees, BBQ steak dinner and prizes (it is a revenue neutral event). Foursomes will be arranged to support fellowship between different Club Rotarians. Did I mention prizes, there are lots it would seem. There is even an event hotel, which will give you a reasonable rate. Deadline is Sept 3, so if you are interested just call me.

Congratulations once again to our fellow Rotarian Tom DeBlois (jr), on the announcement that he is to be presented with the Caring Canadian Award for his volunteer efforts in the community. I think we would all agree that this is a well deserved honour.

PS: Please try and be on time for the meeting. Last week we had to delay the start because so may were late.

Don't forget that your Dues and due.

Makeups to July 28, 1999

Don Anderson, Larry Saunders

Previous Meeting (July 28, 1999)

Our lucky 50/50 winner was Yvonne Cartner but the rest of us were lucky when she pulled the 6 of spades instead of the Queen of Hearts. Your chances today, if your number is called, for the jackpot is 1 in 39.

For a second week in a row a returning exchange student graced the head table. Mary Laura Coady, returning from a year in Australia gave a sketch of her experiences and indicated that she is looking forward to talking more fully to the club, at a later date.

Lee Fleming addressed the Club on the "Our Millennial Hands Project" as project coordinator. She indicated that the project to celebrate the millennium originated from the arts community on the Island and that money is to be raised from the community. The artist Sandy Kowalik talked about what the artistic and spiritual meaning of her sculpture. Project cost is estimated at $300K with the City providing the land and maintenance. The actual location is yet to be decided. Support forms were left on the tables if you wish to support the project individually.

The meeting adjourned early.....please remember that if/when a meeting happens to go over time.
