April 2000 Bulletin
From the President April is with us again, and with it comes our annual Easter Seals Campaign, this year chaired by Angus Orford. The introduction of the Ambassador Jennifer Coughlin was at last weeks kick off. Jennifer is a 13 year old, grade 7 student, who, as a result of a fall, is paralyzed and unable to walk or use a hand. Jennifer's slogan is "Able or Disabled, We are all the Same". There will be a number of events over the next week for which we will be asking for volunteers to help with. Please give freely where ever possible. Plus plan to attend the Easter Seals Telethon on April 10th. It promises to be good entertainment at a very good price. A few Tidbits: Welcome to our newest member Joy Hanley, who has rejoined the Club, this past month, after an absence of several years. If you don't know Joy please take a moment to introduce yourself to her. Don't forget that the District Conference will be hosted by our Club, this coming May, and plan to attend some if not all of the events. Bob Moffatt is heading the organizing committee. In last months bulletin I outlined the criteria for being attendance exempt. If you fall into the categories and wish to become attendance exempt please let me know. On the tables today are a list of those who could become attendance exempt if they so desire, based on the information we currently have on file.
Don't forget to see Gaie Orton if you know of someone whom you feel would make a good member. Our turn around time is much improved thanks to some hard working Rotarians.
85th Annual Assembly and Conference 24 - 28 May, 2000 Delta Prince Edward Hotel A unique program is being planned for the conference and there will be ample opportunity to mix, and exchange ideas with Rotarians from other Clubs in the District. Our Club is the host for this year's assembly and conference, as home club for this year's DG. As such we will be hosting one of the lunches, on May 26 (no meeting the previous or following Monday).
Day 1 (May 25) will focus on the PETS and SETS (President and Secretary training). Single day registrations will be available for Day 2 and 3 Stay toned for more information in the months ahead. Please remember that you are welcome and encouraged to attend. Bob Moffat is chair for the organizing committee. Home Hospitality
As part of this year's District Conference agenda, visiting Rotarians will take part in a Home Hospitality Evening hosted by PEI Rotarians. The evening is a chance for fellowship and for visiting Rotarians to experience some true Island hospitality. Island Rotarians are encouraged to team up with two other Rotarians and offer an evening of informal food and fun! If you are interested in participating please contact Jennifer Evans at 892-1066. We need your help to make this event a fun filled success!
Anniversaries In case you ever wondered, according to our records August is the month with the most members celebrating wedding anniversaries (24) and March has the fewest (1)
April 8 Ray and Kelly Loxdale
Oliver Manuel 34
We recognize birthdays and anniversaries and once a year those with perfect attendance. However it is also important that we recognize the years of service that Rotarians have given to the
Club and community. These Rotarians are recognized on this week's anniversary of their induction into our Club.

Makeups Bob Bateman, Jane Brewster, Jack Cutcliffe (3), Tom DeBlois, Jr.,Bush Dumville, Jennifer Evans (2), Gerry Gabriel, Ken MacKenzie (3), Judy MacCann-Beranger, Lloyd MacLeod, Norman MacLeod, Larry Sider, Rosemary Scott, Chris Severance, Tony Sosnkowski (2), Richard Veinot (2), Stan Woodman Previous Meetings March 6 - Classification Talks Attendance at this meeting was very poor, but then it did have to be switched to an evening meeting as there was no room at the hotel for lunch. Those that did attend were treated to three very good classification talks. Jennifer Evans discussed her role in radio and in particular radio promotions. Jennifer provided an overview of the radio industry and various segments such as programming, music directors, news department, and marketing and sales department. Jennifer's first involvement in radio start with her role as a 4-H club reporter. Jennifer talked about her role in marketing and sales at the group of stations she works for, and how the marketing, programming and target audiences interact. Gerry Gabriel discussed his role in one of the oldest professions, consulting. Consultants are a service industry to their clients and deal with change. The consultant works with individuals and to support them in achieving what they want. Leadership is a key factor and consultants work towards this in dealing with their clients. Gerry reviewed some of the major consultations job he has worked on as well as some of his work history. Gerry noted that in the area of consulting you are only as good as your last study or report. Patti-Sue Lee discussed her changing role in the hospitality and tourism industry. Patti-Sue talked about starting in the airline industry as a flight attendant and working her way through the levels until becoming chief operating officer with a charter airline. She described gaining experience in the industry and in diverse cultures following having been based in the middle east and Indonesia, with a time in Kuwait after the Persian Gulf War, to make things even more interesting. Patti-Sue talked about moving into management and airline consulting, and with Tourism PEI to increase air services into PEI from charter firms. She is now in Tourism Atlantic, ACOA, working on growth and expansion of tourism and culture in the region, particularly in development of US, Japan and European tourist sources. As part of this meeting the Club also awarded Cecil DeLong with a Paul Harris Fellowship, for his long support of the community and activity within our Club. Cec was selected after a bequest had been left the Club for a Paul Harris Fellowship to be award to a Club member. March 13 - East Timor Sharon Knox gave a very interesting presentation on her role as one of the United Nations supervisors, supplied by Canada, for recent election in East Timor. Ms. Knox described her preparation for the election as well as activities during the election. She described the not so palatial accommodations, the environment (where temperature averaged 37 C and some nights it went down to 32 C), and the typical work day and trials that the supervisors had to face in registration of voters and on voting day. One had to always be careful to maintain impartiality but with fairness. She noted that many people had a hard time with ID as they had been burned out of their homes. Ms. Knox described one very emotional and difficult encounter with a man and his son who were seeking protection as he was being hunted and his second son had been killed several days earlier. She reported not having any real enjoyable sightseeing because of the violence. Ms. Knox described election day; of keeping police and militia away, keeping order, of police escorts and sitting up watching ballot boxes at night. The experience brought her both joy and sadness but she learned how important choice really is. March 20 - Wild Blueberry Industry Dr. Wilhelmina Kalt, a research chemist at the Agriculture Canada Research Centre in Kentville was today's speaker. Dr. Kalt discussed the direction the blueberry industry has been going and the health benefits associated with blueberries. Dr. Kalt presented an overview of the blueberry industry and some of the production techniques which have been responsible for the major increase in wild blueberry production in the region. Dr. Kalt talked about blueberries as nutraceuticals or a functional food (food containing components which enhance health). They contain components such as anthocyanins and have a high phenolic content. These components have been linked to reduced cancer and cardiovascular risk. Antioxidants are important in reducing oxidative stress in humans, a cause of aging. There is some evidence, which Dr. Kalt presented, that they may restore some memory loss in aging, and that antioxidants in diets may delay age related decline and even reverse it. Dr. Kalt answered a wide range of questions from members, and yes blueberries were on the lunch menu. March 27 - Easter Seals Kick Off Angus Orford chaired today's kick off for this year's Easter Seals Campaign. We were introduced to this year's Easter Seals Ambassador Jennifer Coughlin. Jennifer is a 13 year old, grade 7 student at Hernwood Junior High. As a result of a fall 3 years ago, Jennifer was paralyzed and unable to walk or use her hands. Surgery has helped her get the use of one hand back. Jennifer's slogan for the year is "Able or Disabled, We are all the Same". Jennifer has three sisters and likes to draw, listen to music, play on the computer and spent time with her friends. Special quests included: the Lieutenant Governor, Premier, the mayors of Charlottetown and Summerside, and Rosemarie MacDonald and Vance Bridges representing the Summerside and Montaque Rotary Clubs. Allan MacLeod note to the club that two former Youth Exchange Students, Susan Stewart and Megan MacDonald, have been selected to be hosts during EXPO2000 in Hanover Germany. It is a pleasure to see our students be successful this way, and know that our program has help them achieve it. PROGRAMS 2000/2001 The Program Committee for the Rotary Year 2000/2001 (starting in July) will be Jennifer Evans and David Arsenault. If you have suggestions for meetings please get in touch with them.
Jennifer (B)892-1066, (H) 892-4070 or at evanspei@hotmail.com Motion to remove Membership Secretary Position in Club By-Laws To amend the Bylaws of the Rotary Club of Charlottetown Inc. to remove the position of Membership Secretary from the Executive of the Club. This would change: Section 2 to read "The Club shall be governed by a Board of Directors (the "Board") consisting of not more than five officers who shall be known as the "Executive"..." This from the current six. Section 3 to read " The Officers of the Club shall be those members of the Club who hold the offices of a) President, b) President Elect, c) Secretary, d) Treasurer, e) Immediate Past President. Section 12 which outlines the duties of the Membership Secretary would be deleted and the duties of the Secretary, Section 11, would be modified to reflect that responsibility for membership rests with the Secretary. Section 45-49 which pertains to the election and induction to membership would be modified to indicate that members proposing prospective members would submit in writing to the Secretary instead of the Membership Secretary and that the Secretary would be responsible for new membership activity. It is understood that this would be via a separate person or committee and not necessarily a board member. Simple Thoughts
