President's Message

I am pleased, on behalf of the membership, to welcome District Governor, Trevor Atkin to the Rotary Club of Charlottetown.

The District Governor will be visiting all Island Clubs this week meaning another full week of his time will be devoted to advancing the interests of Rotary .

The visit of the District Governor is a traditional aspect of the Rotary year, one that has much significance. This visit reminds us that we are part of a much larger family, not only at the district level but internationally. It reminds us that the success of Rotary International rests with the success of each club and the work of each member.

The visit of the District Governor lets us know what is happening in our district and what successes we are enjoying as an organization. In speaking to the Club the District Governor advances goals and objectives for the district that challenge us to take on new endeavours and to maintain the ideals of Rotary service.

He provides the essential perspective of a 'outside look' at our club and the activities we are involved in. Such insights help ensure that we remain not only a strong club but a growing organization.

Each year the Club is asked to report on its activities, and this is the impetus for us to continually look at where we are, where we are going, and how we plan to get there. Speaking of which, last week at our club forum you heard first hand from the proponent of the Phone Tracker project. Next week you will be asked to vote on this project. I have decided that the vote will be conducted by secret ballot because what is really important is your own opinion on this project for our club, not what you think others might want.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ROTARIANS

Eighty-one years ago, October 1, 1917 the Rotary Club of Charlottetown received its' charter.

Today, we celebrate the leadership and commitment of those who established the Rotary Club of Charlottetown and those who through their individual membership and leadership have guided this club successfully through more than eight decades of community service and action.

We have lived the four way test, and placed service above self.

That is what we celebrate today - not another year on the Rotary calendar, but another 365 days of service and support.

Happy birthday to each of you, because You are Rotary.

Follow Your Rotary Dream
1998-99 Rotary International Theme Song

It begins with a dream which touches your heart,

As you act on the Dream, it changes your life.

Then your path inspires others to also take part,

In somehow, somewhere ending suffr'ring and strife.

Follow your Rotary Dream,

Follow your Rotary Dream.

Envision children playing in freedom and peace,

Knowing nothing of illness and pain.

Ravages and gnawing of hunger have ceased,

What untold wonders could these children grow to gain!

As we open ourselves and our hearts to the dream.

Simply by an action, a touch or a word

enlightened by the beacon that Rotary beams,

"Service Above Self" is the lesson we've heard.

Follow your Rotary Dream,

Follow your Rotary Dream.

Previous Meeting

The September 28th meeting was a Club Forum with no head table. The meeting was chaired by President Moe Rodgerson. The song leaders for the day were Tom DeBlois, Jr. and Terry Tanner, who led the club in this year RI theme song.

Secretary's Report: Secretary Allan McLeod introduced 5 visiting Rotarians and one guest of Rotary.

50/50 Draw Winner: The winner was Judy McCann-Beranger who collected $54.00. The jackpot of $1100.00 was not won.

Attendance: The attendance was 65.1% and there were 8 scooters.

President's Message: President Moe Rodgerson welcomed all and called on Secretary Allan McLeod to give his report.

Thanksgiving Flower Project - Judy McCann-Beranger presented a brief report. Judy remarked that order forms and posters had been placed on each table. She encouraged Rotarians to take theirs to their workplace to have the pledges completed. Judy asked for volunteers to help in driving to delivery flowers. She would like to have 100% participation and all pledges should be returned by this Friday. In the auction sale, Dale Mader got the centre piece for $25, and Alden O'Brien and Carl Bagnall each paid $10. for the bouquets.

Auction Sale - John Broderick asked Rotarians to pick up their packets. About 2 dozen packets have not yet been picked up. John reminded that the auction will take place on November 28, and all completed pledges should be returned by October 16.

QEH support: President Moe explained that we have pledged to support the QEH with $80,000 and efforts have to be made to raise funds to meet this goal.

Phonetracker - Len Griffin, formerly of Lions Club in N.S., explained about this program as a possible source of funding. Phone-tracker is a free automatic plastic telephone directory, with advertisements from local businesses, to be delivered to households and businesses in the local community. All advertisers get a free internet ad listing on the phonetacker web site. The product should be ready by April and sale should end by next November. This is a concept similar to yellow pages. Full page advertising on both sides would bring $1800.00. Should our Rotary Club take on the project? The profit share of the club will range from 10 to 30% depending upon the number of copies distributed. President Moe remarked that we will make a decision next week whether or not to pursue this project further.

Octoberfest - Kim Griffin gave a brief report. Kim remarked that those who attended it last year enjoyed it. 350 tickets were sold. She explained that the next Fest will be planned for next year. We need to plan ahead and need 15 members on the steering committee. Not everyone will be expected to sell tickets.

Makeups to Sept. 28 - Don Anderson (2); Walter Cox (2)
